What are the benefits of permanent residence?(永住者のメリットとは)

Foreigners who have acquired permanent resident status have no restrictions on the activities they can do in Japan, nor are there any restrictions on their period of stay. In other words, permanent resident status is the status of residence that allows them to engage in the widest range of activities among the statuses of residence stipulated in the Immigration Control Act, and there are the following benefits to acquiring it.

① There are no restrictions on activities. You are allowed to do simple labor and other jobs that are not permitted under employment-related statuses. In addition, foreigners who have acquired a status of residence accompanying their husband or wife's status of residence, such as "spouse of a Japanese national," cannot continue to stay in Japan if they divorce their spouse unless they change their status to "long-term resident," etc., but if they have acquired permanent resident status, they do not need to change their status of residence even if their status changes.

② There are no restrictions on the period of stay. After acquiring permanent resident status, there is no need to renew the period of stay or change their status of residence.

By acquiring permanent resident status, you are free from the risk of having to go to the immigration bureau every time you apply for renewal, or of your renewal application being rejected.

③ Increased social credibility

To obtain permanent resident status, you need to have lived in Japan for many years and meet various requirements. It is not a qualification that anyone can obtain. Therefore, by obtaining permanent resident status, your social credibility increases, and specifically, it becomes easier to take out a mortgage, and for business owners, it becomes easier to obtain loans.

永住者の在留資格を取得した外国人については、日本における活動内容に制限がなく、また、在留期間の定めもありません。つまり、永住者の在留資格は、入管法上規定された在留資格のなかで最も広範な活動を行うことのできる在留資格であり、取得することに次のようなメリットがあります。

① 活動に制限がなくなります。就労系の在留資格では認められていない単純労働などの仕事につくことも許されます。また、「日本人の配偶者等」のように夫または妻の在留資格に付随して在留資格を取得している外国人については、配偶者と離婚した場合、「定住者」等の在留資格に変更をしない限り、日本に滞在し続けることはできませんが、永住者の在留資格を取得していれば、身分関係が変動した場合であっても、在留資格を変更する必要がありません。

② 在留期間の制限がなくなります。永住者の在留資格を取得した後は、在留期間を更新したり、在留資格を変更したりする必要がなくなります。
永住者の在留資格を取得することにより、更新申請の度に入管に申請に行くことや更新申請が不許可になるといったリスクから解放されます。
