Permanent residence application [Key points for the statement of reasons]

The statement of reasons for a permanent residence application explains "why you want to live in Japan permanently" and is an important document in the screening process.

When applying for permanent residence, you will need to submit a statement of reasons, but the immigration bureau's website only lists the following.

  • Please write in any format about why you need permanent residence.
  • If you write in a language other than Japanese, a translation is required.

There is no format for the statement of reasons, so it has the advantage of being free to write, but many people seem to have trouble figuring out how to write it.

The key points for the statement of reasons are as follows:

① History from coming to Japan to the present

Write the date and year, and write your educational background and work history.
Make sure it matches the contents of your past change and renewal applications.

② Current work situation

Write about your current job content and what makes it rewarding.

③ Current living situation

Touch down the fact that you meet the requirements for permanent residence (years of residence, annual income, health insurance, pension, fulfillment of tax obligations) and describe your living situation with your spouse, children, and family.

Relationship with family: Highlight your good relationship. (Include specific anecdotes)

Describe your annual income, savings, assets, rent, and current lifestyle.

④ Relationship with guarantor

Describe what kind of relationship you have, including specific anecdotes.

⑤ Reason for applying for permanent residence

Explain why you want to live in Japan and not your home country, and why Japan is the place to be.

When we look at the statements written by customers, they are often too long. It is important to write concisely, including the above main points, on about two A4 sheets of paper.

There are also several template statements for statements on the Internet. However, if the content is clearly a template, the examiner may not understand the true reason for applying for permanent residence, which may put you at a disadvantage in the examination.

When using a template, use it only as a reference, and always replace it with your own words.
