Can a Dependent (Family Stay) Visa Be Approved with Low Income? Understanding Japan’s Financial Requirements/

    #FamilyStayVisa #DependentVisaJapan #FinancialCapacity #LowIncome #JapanImmigration

One of the most common reasons for refusal of a Dependent (Family Stay) visa is “insufficient financial capacity.”
Many people ask: “How much income do I really need?” or “Is it still possible with my current salary?”
This article explains, based on practical experience, how far low income can still be accepted and when the risk of refusal becomes high.

    1. There is no official “minimum income line”

Japanese immigration does not publish any rule like “You must earn at least X yen per year.”
Instead, immigration looks at whether your household can live stably in Japan as a whole.

    What immigration actually looks at

    • Total household income and number of family members
    • Balance between income and main living costs (rent, utilities, food, etc.)
    • Stability of employment (full-time, contract, dispatch, part-time, etc.)
    • Whether taxes and social insurance have been properly paid
    • Amount of savings and/or financial support from relatives

This means that even if your income is not very high,
you may still be approved if you can show that your household budget is realistic and stable.

    2. Rough income ranges based on practice

The following is a rough guideline based on practical cases (assuming a couple, living in an urban area). It is not a legal rule.

    <

    For a couple (2 people)

    • 3.5M JPY or more per year – Generally considered stable in many cases
    • 2.5–3.5M JPY – Often acceptable, depending on rent, savings, and job type
    • 2.0–2.5M JPY – Requires strong supporting documents and explanation
    • Below 2.0M JPY – High risk of refusal

    When you have children

    • As a guideline, an additional 500,000–800,000 JPY per child is helpful
    • Because of school and childcare costs, a family with several children and income in the low 3M range is higher risk

Again, this depends heavily on factors such as local rent levels, number of dependents, and spouse’s income.

    3. When low income can still be accepted

Even if your annual income is on the low side, your case may be approved if the following positive factors are present.

Positive factors that can offset low income

    • Savings of around 1–3M JPY or more
    • Low rent (for example, around 50,000–70,000 JPY per month)
    • Additional income from a spouse’s part-time job or financial support from family
    • No tax or social insurance arrears
    • Stable job, or a new full-time or long-term contract offer

The key is whether you can clearly show in numbers that “our household will not be in deficit and can maintain a basic standard of living.”

    4. Typical patterns that often lead to refusal

    High-risk situations

    • Annual income below 2.0M JPY and almost no savings
    • Very high rent compared to income (e.g., 2.5M JPY income with 120,000 JPY rent)
    • Many dependents but relatively low household income
    • Tax or social insurance arrears
    • Unstable work pattern (few work days, income fluctuates greatly)

Even in these cases, you may still improve your chances by carefully preparing reason letters and strong supporting documents.

    5. What you should prepare if your income is low

    Practical countermeasures

    • Bank balance certificate – often essential when income is low
    • Documents showing low rent or a concrete plan to move to a cheaper apartment
    • Proof of spouse’s part-time income or regular financial support from relatives
    • A simple household budget sheet showing income and main monthly expenses
    • A detailed reason letter explaining your financial capacity and how you will manage your life in Japan

In other words, you should not rely on “we can somehow manage”.
Instead, you need to show concretely: “This is our income, these are our main expenses, so this is why we can live stably.”

    6. Frequently asked questions (Q&A)

Q1. Is it still possible with income in the low 2M JPY range?

    A. It can be possible, depending on your situation. If you have low rent, a small number of dependents, and some savings, you may be approved with proper explanation and supporting documents.

Q2. Can savings compensate for low income?

    A. Yes. Savings are very important when your income is low. Immigration will look more positively if you can show that you have a stable balance over time, not just a temporary deposit.

    Q3. Does my spouse’s part-time income help?

    A. Yes. Your spouse’s part-time or side income is counted as household income. In that case, be sure to submit payslips or tax documents and explain your situation as a combined household budget.
