Japan Permanent Residence Through HSP Points: How to Prove 80 Points One Year Earlier
Why your point total today is only part of the calculation
The 80-point Highly Skilled Professional route may allow an eligible applicant to apply for Permanent Residence after a shorter residence period.
However, having 80 or 90 points today does not necessarily mean that the one-year requirement has already been completed.
The date of reaching 80 points matters
An applicant’s point total can change even when the applicant continues working for the same company.
Additional points may arise from events such as:
- obtaining an eligible Master’s or Doctoral degree
- reaching a required period of professional experience
- obtaining an eligible Japanese-language qualification
- moving into a different salary range
- receiving another qualification recognized by the points system
Other factors, including age, salary and employment conditions, may also reduce or change the calculation over time.
A simple example
Suppose an applicant had 70 points and later completed a Master’s degree that increased the total to 90 points.
In that situation, the applicant should not simply count one year from the day the points were recalculated.
It is first necessary to identify:
- the official date on which the degree was awarded
- whether the degree is eligible for points
- whether the applicant had at least 80 points on that date
- whether the other point items remained valid during the following year
A graduation ceremony date, diploma issue date and formal degree-conferral date may not always be the same. The document actually issued by the educational institution should therefore be reviewed carefully.
What evidence may be needed?
- degree certificate or graduation certificate showing the relevant date
- employment certificates describing qualifying professional experience
- employment contract and salary documents for the relevant period
- Japanese-language test certificate, where points are claimed
- documents supporting any additional bonus-point category
- point calculation sheets for both the application date and the earlier date
The Immigration Services Agency instructs applicants to calculate the historical point total using the point table currently applicable to the Permanent Residence application.
This does not eliminate the need to prove the historical facts. The calculation table and the supporting evidence perform different roles.
Points should be checked as a timeline
Instead of preparing only one point calculation, it is often useful to create a short timeline.
- Date you first entered or began residing in Japan
- Date you started your current or previous employment
- Date each degree or qualification was obtained
- Date your salary or employment conditions changed
- Date you believe you first reached 80 points
- Proposed Permanent Residence application date
This approach can reveal whether the one-year period has already been completed, will be completed later, or cannot yet be confirmed from the available documents.
Do you need to hold HSP status itself?
The official Permanent Residence document categories distinguish between applicants who currently hold Highly Skilled Professional status and applicants using the highly skilled points framework while holding another eligible status.
The applicable document list therefore depends on the applicant’s current status of residence and route. It should not be assumed that every 80-point case requires exactly the same documents.
When should you check your points?
The practical time to review the calculation is when a point-related fact changes—not only after one year has passed.
An early review may show which documents should be preserved and the earliest date on which the historical point requirement may be demonstrable.
It may also show that waiting is more appropriate because a degree, salary, experience period or supporting document is not yet sufficient.
Final message
The 80-point route is not only a question of arithmetic. It is a question of dates, continuity and evidence.
Before selecting an application date, ask: “Can I prove when I first reached 80 points and that the necessary points existed at both relevant times?”
